Re: no gui at boot
November 21, 2009 by mattb4
First off find out where your booting stops. If at a prompt try entering
runlevel (or su to root and than run if it says command not found).
Posts what it returns. It will give you a simple number like 5
Did you check the YaST System Services for default run level as asked above?

"Belay that Mr. Welan", replied the Captain.
"Open a channel to the Chief.exe of the Dos Hegemony."
Communications between the Linux Federation and Benighted 7th Planet of Windows has not always gone smoothly over the years. The MS Leadership keeps its people uninformed of the true affairs in the greater Galactic OS Civilization. Thus most Win 7ers are unaware that Freedom actually exists. They just do what the Programs imposed by MS required and suffer the consequences. The propagandists for MS insure that the users are kept in a state of denial.
Lately the Planet Win 7 (renamed from the Previously known as Vista*) has undergone some slight improvements to keep its people from revolting. This is not unknown to happen periodically in the Dos Hegemony. They make life extremely miserable for a version and than "lighten up" so that the people think things are better.
* The planet Vista is a Penal colony for the Dos Hegemony where XP followers were consigned for punishment.

Signatures are non functioning while upgrades to The Forum software are underway.
Your booting seems to work but gets stuck You might check in YaST System Services (run level) Expert to see if you have Default run level after booting set to
5. Full Multiuser...

Sounds like a video card driver issue. Post your hardware if you would. If you have not installed the proprietary drivers you could go to YaST and enable the Ati or Nvidia repository and install the drivers for your hardware.
The Guide here: http://opensuse-guide.org/3d.php will help you get 3-D setup. it is part of the Beginners guide here: http://opensuse-guide.org/index.php

Back in the '60s/'70s there was much talk of having a 32hr work week as standard. This would provide more time for recreation and also help more people to be employed. I wonder what happened?
Now people work 80hrs a week as standard and continue to work on their own time with all the gadgets they carry about with them. And the so called 40hr max is fading memory. Not sure this was great path to take.

Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things.
One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor....
I went to a bookstore and asked the salesclerk, "Where the self-help section?"
She replied, "If I tell you it would defeat the purpose".
What if there was no hypothetical questions?
What do you do if you see an endangered animal eating an endangered plant?
If the police arrest a mime, do they tell him he has the right to remain silent?
Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy adultery?
Why is it called Tourist Season if we can't shoot them?

Hmm... debates about MS and Religion (and whether MS is a new age cult whos predicted end times has not happened yet) are pushing the boundaries of the Forum guidelines.
Versioning however, as practiced by those followers of the Computer Creed, is fair game for endless debate on how may Versions of Ubuntu can dance on the head of a pen drive.

Still problems with the Forum. Sorry but according to Support it is a DNS issue where changes have not caught up with Server locations. This should clear up in a bit they say. lots of features are being rolled out from Lefora that are also creating bugs like the inability to change Signatures.
Re: Leap from DSL to BB

I am still waiting the leap from mule delivered Internet to having a connection within 3-5 business days. DSL is promised in the near future - next month they tell me.
(I thought anything not dialup was broadband?)

Let me be the first to bow to our new Forum Overlord Welan. May the lint between his flippers overflow endlessly. (Happy BD Welan).
When sobriety hits me I may regret this. Would not be the first time.

... I put tabasco on just about everything.
-jonathanr
I remember friends from back in my Navy years that did the same. Heck I swore they put it into their coffee. Never did much care for Tabasco although I do like jalapeños and many of the chili peppers (mostly the milder varieties) and always liked cayenne pepper (never considered it being all that spicy though other people say it really affects them).

Some oddness.
October 28, 2009 by mattb4
Sorry, there seems to be some odd things going on with the looks tonight. Lefora is adding Favicons and repairing the Signature display. I notice some Avatars have disappeared though I expect they will be fixed before long.

Green Pumpkins??? Perhaps you are thinking of watermelons. Those are traditionally carved on the June Solstice to celebrate the banishment of Windows (sorry I mean Winter).
