Re: So - What's your verdict on 11.2 ?

November 25, 2009 by eberhard

Up to now I like it. It's quite faster, esp. OpenOffice is starting much faster.

Now it's more like 32hr a day, and the night too. Crazy!

I was like that too in the beginning. Thought the company was lost without me. Until I realized that my boss already left several hours ago when I went home. And that my health was going down the gutter. So then I started to work only the normal hours and told my boss to hire one more guy, if he wants to get the work done. Was a career stopper, but what is a career good for, when you are 40 and dead?

Actually, it has nothing to do with version numbers. Someone in the upper echelons of microsoft is into Christian numerology. Therein, the number "7" is symbolic of perfection... [image]

So, I wonder, if they were heading for perfection, why did they manage to fail so completely?

Re: Windows 7

No, it's not.  3mph again got it wrong. It's the 4th.

NT 3.x is the first version of the NT kernel, named 3.x only because of the similarity of the GUI with the windows 3 gui.
NT 4.x the second major revision.
Windows 2000 / XP the 3rd revision, internally named NT 5.0 and 5.1
Vista is the 4th revision, internally named NT 6.0
Windows 7 is NT 6.1, not a major release.

At any time, say after 1995, the current linux was better than the current windows version. (Keep in mind, in 1995 it was Windows 3.1, which was terrible.)

Re: Windows 7

It's named Windows 7, with 7 meaning 2007, the date when it ought to be finished. As we all know, it was not finished then and M$ came out with Vista instead. So now finally it reached the state that Vista should have been. No wonder Windows 2007 is only a warmed up Vista. Not finished, only warmed up, and slightly smelling.

420 EUR per day seem a bit high, but not extraordinary. E.G. a lpic certification course in Switzerland comes for about the half.

The primary source seem to be 'Le canard', a satire magazine. But since it's cited in the inquirer, it must be true. Btw. from the name of the magazine 'Le canard', french for duck, comes the german 'Ente' for a forged newspaper message.

Ok, "Thinning the Hurd", that explains something. But, ... why on earth did you replace linux by hurd, and I thought it wasn't ready yet anyways, being planned for next year?

Again the thread titles are hardly readable against the light and dark elements of the wallpaper.

Never tried to install virtualbox on a stick. Maybe it won't work. Since it will install virtual network adapters, maybe you need administrator rights to install it. But qemu with lxde looks good too.

Re: openSUSE VM under windows XP

Maybe you like to try virtualbox http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/3.0.6/VirtualBox-3.0.6-52128-Win.exe instead. I have an instance of openSUSE running in a virtualbox under XP. The box has a virtual memory of 256MB, and I use xfce in openSUSE. It's quite quick, almost like running native. You have to install the virtualbox guest tools in openSUSE to get goodies like additional screen resolutions and seamless mouse integration. As for the graphics card, like in virtualbox you will also in qemu just have to accept what the emulator offers. In virtualbox it is a 'virtualbox'-graphics adapter that comes with the guest tools. Otherwise you only get a framebuffer card.

Also you might have a look at http://www.cygwin.com/ which offers unix like tools and an X-server under windows, which gives you the opportunity to setup a virtualnetwork and accessing the virtual linux system with the X-server running in fullscreen.

'Bar hoping'?  Is that when you sit alone at the bar and hope that the sweety from the other end would come over and pick you up? Know that, know it all ...
