hi
i tried the first section:-
Recommended name resolve order = bcast host lmhosts wins (leading two mandatory)
You have name resolve order = <line not found>
To fix this go to Yast --> Network Services --> Samba Server --> Identity -->
Advanced Settings --> Expert Global Settings --> Add -->
locate this in the drop-down list: name resolve order. Then click OK.
Then enter this in the following blank space: bcast host lmhosts wins --> OK
restarted smb and then gave it a few minutes, hit F5 in windows and thar she blows!
hoorah, nicely found matt :D
i'll take you off my HIT list and back onto my christmas "do not shoot" list ;)

Well, I've used Suse linux for about a year now if that, I consider myself to be a total noob, but a dangerous one in that i will tinker with things until they break. When that happens, if i can't figure out what went wrong or am just unable to do it myself, a spurt of postings to suseunbound will follow!

Linux SMB shares not appearing in Windows Workgroup
December 22, 2008 by badgerfruit
As per the screenshot below, I have created several shares in /etc/samba/smb.conf which are browseable when using a Windows machine if I enter the IP address of the computer into the address bar, but they don't show "by default" in the workgroup list:- http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/2528/badgergrouple7.th.jpg You see the left-pane shows the computers "Media Server" and "Data Server", but the right-pane only shows the two Windows machines "Download Server" and "Virtual XP". I can't for the life of me recall where I saw or read about the "fix" which would make all the machines show in both panes (without having to browse to the SMB shares first). Can anyone offer any help please? edit:- Example smb.conf from one of the linux machines:-
# smb.conf is the main Samba configuration file. You find a full commented # version at /usr/share/doc/packages/samba/examples/smb.conf.SUSE if the # samba-doc package is installed. # Date: 2008-06-06 [global] printing = cups printcap name = cups cups options = raw map to guest = Bad User include = /etc/samba/dhcp.conf logon path = \\%L\profiles\.msprofile logon home = \\%L\%U\.9xprofile logon drive = P: usershare allow guests = Yes netbios name = bgrsvr-y workgroup = BADGERGROUP server string = "Data Server" [to-sort] comment = items-to-sort path = /home/badger_fruit/data/to-sort guest ok = yes read only = no force user = badger_fruit

Re: Bad superblock preventing system from booting!

ok guys a final update on the sitation:-
i could not recover the LVM, no matter what i tried so i physically removed all the disks and am going to process them using a bit of windows software called "recover my pc" .. i tested it on the windows OS drive (freshly formatted) and it found a load of stuff so it's currently 3% through one of the drives from the LVM (as it also claims to recover partial LVMs), thing is, this disk is 750GB, it's 3% done and been running for 19hours!!! I estimate this will take another 25-30 days (OMG!) to scan and then there's the recovery time on top.
Ultimately, I don't care for the AVI files, MP3s and so on, I can get each one again no problem but i'm just hoping it can recover most if not all of the family pictures (there are about 8 years worth on there!!!).
I have now three servers instead of one:-
Download and Backup Server
BGRSVR-Z
Running Windows XP (booo) this is mainly for RDP access to the LAN from outside and as the name says, downloading files (MP3s, AVIs and so on) and also has a DVDRW drive which I have scheduled a monthly FULL backup of "Photos" "Private Files" (ie spreadsheets and docs), "to sort" and a few other bits and bats from over the LAN. The written DVD will then be removed and a new one inserted for the next month. I have a pack of 12 so one for each month meaning I'll have data for 1 year before being over-written (see, learnt my lesson there!)
Data Server
BGRSVR-Y
Running Suse 11.0 it hosts the "data files" of the network - for example, photos, desktop pics, spreadsheets, docs and that kind of thing. It also runs my web-portal (http://badgerfruit.homeip.net) and associated links from there (it's a faster PC then where I used to run the web-server) Fortunately, most of the portal was on the working / partition from the server that crashed so I've no large code-writing headache to have to re-do!!
Media Server
BGRSVR-X
Running Suse 11.0 this will host the TV-Series, Movies, Music and Music-Videos.
This is a rebuild of the PC the fell over last time but I totallt trust the PC itself (even though it's a wee 800mhz P3!).
There won't be a backup of this server as the contents can be replaced no problem from any torrent site (not that i condone piracy of course; o wait, anyone who read my blog before it died will know that i DO condone it lol!) Anyway, point being it doesn't matter if that lot dies again!
I will of course be updating the _BGRLAN.JPG and hosting it as soon as I can (be bothered!) but a table with the server plans is below for those interested!!
*SEE EDIT BELOW
Oh, all the servers are running on an 80GB HDD for the OS/SWAP partitions but they're not shown on that grid above.
All the disks shown above are going to be new drives purchased from my favourite computer shop as storage is so cheap!
Get this:-
*SEE EDIT BELOW
Anyway, the disks I'm buying are a total of just over £300 but I've asked for CCL vouchers for christmas and my birthday (Jan 9th y'all!) so that should go some-way towards the cost, the rest, well I work dammit and insist on spending some of it before my wife does lol!
Anyway, peace out for now, sorry it took so long to update, i've not been in a mood for writing on forums recently and only just stopped weeping from the data loss!
Regards to one and all

Copy/paste from OOCalc didn't quite work, here's a screengrab instead ;)

Apache2.2.8-28.4 clean install giving errors when starte
December 9, 2008 by badgerfruit
Good afternoon all,
Just installed apache2 from Yast > "Software Management" on fresh install of suse11.0 (kde3.5) and I get the message below.
I figured that as I used a repo, it should exist, perhaps it's just incorrect permissions or something ....
So it really doesn't exist; how come a clean install doesn't put all the files on or at least have the right "Include" statements in the core httpd.conf? Is it just that computers are having their revenge on me and not letting me do ANYTHING now?

cheers guys for the replies; i'm going to have to download and burn a live cd of something and try that tonight (if it's not worked)
i'm really worried i may have shot myself in the foot with running the resierfsck - i've a feeling it's gone through each block on the hdd, recognised it's not a resier block, converted it and trashed the data in the process
*cries
ive spoken to many people i know, they all seem to have quite a lot of my data (eg movies, tv series etc) so i should be ok for that, it's just the family photos, spreadsheets and what not that i don't think i have a backup of (bad badger!)
keep those fingers crossed for me please everyone!

OH FFS! LOL!
Well, if I loose the data I loose the data and learn a valuable lesson - MAKE A BACKUP!!!
The only things I am bothered about are the family photos and "private files" (ie spreadsheets, copies of letters and so on), everything else can be re-downloaded haha, my ISP is going to love me!
I went into the loft this morning and it did show a lot of "repaired" messages, it's done about 45-50% so if it's trashed, it's trashed I guess.
I am so gutted, this machine has been running fine until I put that last disk in then all of a sudden, the disk goes fubar and I loose nearly 3TB of stuff :(
I'll update the thread once it's done (which may be about 10/11pm tonight UK time).

Bad superblock preventing system from booting!
December 4, 2008 by badgerfruit
Please, can anyone help me!
My setup in question is the mighty "bgrsvrx", it has 8 disks which are combined into a single LVM.
I suspected one of my disks was bad as it started clicking. To prevent data loss I figured I would remove it from the LVM and then remove from the system as a whole.
So I went into LVM but instead of being shown the LVM, I was presented with the "first run" screen; ie my existing LVM had vanished!
Panicing (as this is a 78% full 3TB group!) I came out and went into Partitioner instead, to make sure they were at least being recognised.
I was presented with a warning about one of the disks (/dev/sde in this case) not being able to be read and I can't do anything with it in this screen.
Not too worried at this stage I quit parted and tried the LVM again - still nothing shown.
I also noticed that some of the folders were now giving me an IO error when I tried to LS.
"Hmm, perhaps a reboot might kick it over" I thought and being awesome, typed the reboot command and hit enter.
Now, this is a slow machine (P3 800mhz) so I left it for 10 minutes to come back in but after that time, I still had nothing. I tried to ping the machine and it didn't respond so I climbed into the loft where I was prompted to "enter root password" (which I did).
The prompt then said "(Recovery) root # "
I noticed up the page that it was saying there was a bad superblock on volume /dev/system/home (the LVM).
NOW WHAT?! PLEASE HELP! I have about 2.5TB of data which although it's nothing life threatening, would be a disaster never-the-less if lost.

Microsoft have developed a unique new patching method for windows Vista which I think you all need to be aware of! Its rather entertaining albeit a little long winded!
I suspect this is the reason why they have started work on Windows 7, although I hate to see how they will deploy patches then!!! Maybe you will have to return your PC to Microsoft!!!!

Re: IM Server for suse?
November 15, 2008 by badgerfruit
Is this just use in your house? If it is what's wrong with the old tried and true method of yelling at each other across the house, or go hi tech and get cordless phones with intercoms. :D
-bdquick
Well, we've BEEN shouting around the house and it's all well and good until your wife starts yelling back "WILL YOU KEEP THE NOISE DOWN!"
I saw some walkie-talkies (http://www.cordless-phones.uk.com/two-way-radios/two-way-radios/doro-wt87-walkie-talkie/?referrer=froogle&keyword=doro%2Bdoro%2Bwt87%2Bwalkie%2Btalkie) and I think that this is the better option; it's so we can all find each other in "Club Penguin" (www.clubpenguin.com) although my 8 yr old can use MSN/Kopete OK it means having to sign her up to an MSN / Yahoo / Other account when I'd rather she didn't. At least not yet. The other player is my 3 yr old son, he can't read or write/type so obviously the "sensible" adult (that's me by the way) helps him to log on etc.
However, since the laptop broke (awww) we ahve to play in separate rooms and it's difficult to co-ordinate.
I've been thinking about it and the WT method is better, he still has to type in IM ...
Oh well, thanks for the input, if i do ever get around to the IM idea again, ill let you guys know how i did it :)

IM Server for suse?
November 14, 2008 by badgerfruit
I am considering running a local IM server on a Suse10.3 machine, anyone got any suggestions?
I was reading about Jabbered2 but would prefer one i can get and run from a package rather than ./configure and so on
(i don't mind doing that but someone on another forum once told me off for building my own stuff on a package distro lol!)
cheers all - hope you're all well, badger's been off-grid for a while but is sort of back ish now ;D

Re: What I would like to see in openSUSE 11.2
November 11, 2008 by badgerfruit
my biggest bugbear with 10.3 (not so much 11 but still apparent) is folder loading times; still takes an age to load my "music" folder, but I guess with > 1500 items it's got a lot to read in.
Still, as much as i dislike XP, it loads the same folder within seconds.
And before you ask, the share is on a suse10.3 machine accessed over LAN on XP and Suse11
Fix that and i may want to make babies with 11.2 ;)
