So - What's your verdict on 11.2 ?
November 24, 2009 by alastairo
Quite a few of us have now got openSUSE 11.2 running - what's your verdict ?
Which desktop do you use, and what do you think of it ?
How easy was the install and fix-up after that ?
I will give my verdict a bit later.

That name (lornix) is familiar.
It's been a while - welcome back.

Hey BD, not much space left on your windows D - must be all the anti-virus programs !
Re: So who stayed up all night?

I have ordered a copy, as it is too expensive to download so much data. So next weekend (when all the problems are sorted), I'll take the plunge. Looking at the other forum, seems like quite a few with Radeon cards are having a hard time - but they are getting it sorted.
I am looking forward to the new version.

I tried the other day, and could not upload a picture. Previously I found that it must be in .jpg format

Matt
Really sorry to hear about your Dad.
It's not a nice thing to happen, but sadly it always does.

I had a good laugh Bozo.
I personally like to test the biscuits that my dogs eat. Really pretty bland - but some do have that little extra flavour !
Incidentally, I worked out that the dog food (for two dogs) each month costs as much as our human food (for two).
The dog food companies have done pretty well with their marketing.(Almost as good as Redmond)

You can try puppy linux which runs in memory only and can get to all the media files on the hard disk.
You can connect by different methods and it has a super fast seamonkey browser. It really impressed me

Re: Windows 7
October 23, 2009 by alastairo
I originally changed from windows to linux because I deplored the rip-off.
The Rip-off is even greater now, and even if I were given a free copy of W7, I have absolutely no desire to use it.
I retain a copy of w2k on a vitual machine in order to run some of those specialised programs that will not run under linux.
Linux has opened so many new doors - and the people who use it are very helpful, nice and friendly.
I just had someone call me to demonstrate some new software. My first question was " does it run on linux ? ", to which I got a negative reply. So I then said "In that case, I am not interested."
It gave me a great deal of satisfaction. I suppose that I should be happy that the person knew what linux was !!

I like the new favicon - but can't work out what the pic is.
It has a distinctive look.
Re: Preparing for opensuse 11.2 upgrade

I thought to kick off, an addon for firefox called password exporter
I would use it just before shutting down the old system and when I start the new system. For security reasons, I would not leave it on permanently.
Preparing for opensuse 11.2 upgrade
October 14, 2009 by alastairo
I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread of how to prepare for an upgrade to 11.2.
I read that after 11.2, it will be fairly simple to upgrade - but at the moment we all know that it is best to do a clean install.
So how do we go about it ?
Re: I can see clearly now the rain is gone.

That is a good link Matt. If I had to buy specs here it would cost more than $120. So next time I'll get a test done and buy online - and even with DHL it'll be much cheaper.
Skeleton

What's the story behind the skeleton ? We can't have a member of the community going hungry.
Better call Welan to release some of those sardines that he has bee hoarding !!

Re: Interview with Joe "Zonker" Brockmeier at TUXradar

I think the comparison to music is quite good. The Beatles did something different, which the public liked and it just mushroomed from there.
Similarly, if in the computer world, if some apparatus or OS hits the hot button - the growth could be phenominal.
I remember when Google came on the scene, it was a breath of fresh air. I let all my friends know about it and it mushroomed. (Google ought to send me a thank-you !! )
Distros are not as easy, as they are the same core - but yet ubuntu has achieved a vast following. I think that with certain apparatus eg. mobiles or netbooks, linux will make it's mark.
Let's face it - Linux is #1 in the supercomputer world already !
