In honor of the Halloween Holiday MS has released the latest in the Horror series "Windows". Early reviews say this one is not as scary as the last (Vista) but packs many terrifying moments. Of course there is the old standard where the victim unknowingly enters into a unbreakable compact with the devil (EULA).
Victims are lulled into a feeling that this time they will survive and not be turned into Zombies (Not likely, it is a horror OS after all), as they start the infernal machine going. After as much as 20+ hours of loading the computer boots up with evil incarnate (otherwise known as the Welcome Screen). At this point there is no going back.
Time will tell if MS has released a classic or another dud. Of course fans will go to use it, so it should have a good opening, but after that we will just have to see.
It's named Windows 7, with 7 meaning 2007, the date when it ought to be finished. As we all know, it was not finished then and M$ came out with Vista instead. So now finally it reached the state that Vista should have been. No wonder Windows 2007 is only a warmed up Vista. Not finished, only warmed up, and slightly smelling.
I originally changed from windows to linux because I deplored the rip-off.
The Rip-off is even greater now, and even if I were given a free copy of W7, I have absolutely no desire to use it.
I retain a copy of w2k on a vitual machine in order to run some of those specialised programs that will not run under linux.
Linux has opened so many new doors - and the people who use it are very helpful, nice and friendly.
I just had someone call me to demonstrate some new software. My first question was " does it run on linux ? ", to which I got a negative reply. So I then said "In that case, I am not interested."
It gave me a great deal of satisfaction. I suppose that I should be happy that the person knew what linux was !!
At any time, say after 1995, the current linux was better than the current windows version. (Keep in mind, in 1995 it was Windows 3.1, which was terrible.)
Although eberhard is correct in saying that windows 7 was supposed to be released n place of vista the origins of it's name are far simpler. it is called windows 7 because it is the 7th major version of the windows kernel to be released
No, it's not. 3mph again got it wrong. It's the 4th.
NT 3.x is the first version of the NT kernel, named 3.x only because of the similarity of the GUI with the windows 3 gui.
NT 4.x the second major revision.
Windows 2000 / XP the 3rd revision, internally named NT 5.0 and 5.1
Vista is the 4th revision, internally named NT 6.0
Windows 7 is NT 6.1, not a major release.

Actually, I wonder if they called the NT 3.x kernel that because they pretty much took it and the developer from Digital's VMS, David Cuttler. Which since they practically copied the VMS code, just translated it into C, then it might make sense that they'd call the NT kernel 3.x
Actually, it has nothing to do with version numbers. Someone in the upper echelons of microsoft is into Christian numerology. Therein, the number "7" is symbolic of perfection... ![]()

Christianity and numerology don't go. Numerology is a religion. And actually http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_NT#Releases That may explain it better.
Hmm... debates about MS and Religion (and whether MS is a new age cult whos predicted end times has not happened yet) are pushing the boundaries of the Forum guidelines.
Versioning however, as practiced by those followers of the Computer Creed, is fair game for endless debate on how may Versions of Ubuntu can dance on the head of a pen drive.
Sorry if I pushed things in the wrong direction. It was just one of my feeble attempts at humor. (Comparing windows 7 (or any ms product) with perfection.) Wasn't trying to start a religious discussion at all.

You are forgiven this time. Don't let it happen again.

Thank you, sir, I will do my best, but the flesh is weak. (And take it easy with the whip, the hairshirt is bad enough.)

LOL. I love your sense of humor.

So, I wonder, if they were heading for perfection, why did they manage to fail so completely?
