Us Southern folks have decided the correct pronunciation for Linux is "Lie Nuks" (rhymes with ducks). No offense to Linus, but it sounds all too Big City hifalutin to pronounce it "Lin ick". I know that is "Linus Unix" but most folks down in these parts have never heard tell of Unix and look upon such things with deep suspicion. (The guys especially.) Now Lies and ducks are well known and mostly thought positively about. Though there was that time I member back in '68.. but I am drifting.
So to accelerate adoption amongst the real people, Linux will now have the new way to mention it. As for tomatos will... that is a different story.
I have found that most of the locals up north here have a rather unusual way of saying "LINUX"
Actually they say it one of 2 ways. If perchance you should bring up the subject of linux in casual conversation the usual response is "huh?" Others may also say "Whats that?" Now I know these folks up here may suffer brain freeze (I'm begining to believe it's a sport here) but it strikes me that that is not a proper way to say "LINUX"
I have observed this discussion many times over the years in many places, online, in print, and in person. It seems no one will take the authority and responsibility for declaring an official pronunciation for the name.
Therefore, since no one knows you're a dog on the internet, I am now representing myself an authority on many things, including pronunciation. My official decree is that "Linux" is pronounced "Li (as in lint)- nicks (as in nicks)".
Now you all may go forth with the confidence that you have heard the official decree and spread the news that there is an official pronunciation issued by an authority on such things.
That sounds good, but as we have no bias, we are as wise as before. You seem to use a sort of English as your base for "Li (as in lint)- nicks (as in nicks)". But as there is considerable difference between English and American (and inside those two emanations of those languages), we, non native speakers of any those, do still not know anything now. How do we know how an English/American speaker pronounces the Finnish name Linus? (mostly lousy from the Finish point of view).
When talking about pronounciation you should use IPA . Nice, a new language to learn!
For the non-native Southerners like yourself hcvv, pronunciation rules are simplified. Simply take a Northern word like Linus and give emphasis to the vowels. Don't matter what the Fine ish people have to say about it. Its not like they invented Southern (at least I don't think so).
English is one messed up language, I admire non-native speakers how they even begin to cope baffles me...
I actually have one I've done it for years and my Dads profession was English, he finally conceded the point though ain't wasn't allowed. I've always said almonds [all-monds] now I got corrected and yes I know it should be [ar-monds] now my argument was well I don't say [ar-ways]. So I say if they understand what you mean, correct and queens English and dialect English are 2 different things.
My little gripe is color the amount of times I have to correct that or centre, and who are you calling an ass, I'm not going to take offence or make a defence.
Edit I could keep going..
I, (northerner), have no problem to understand alastario (southerner).
Alastario, dit kan nog heel leuk woren, ze begrijpen ons niet.

Therein is your problem,FM, you're stuck on the fence. Iffin it is Bob-wire it may hurt some. However as Bozo says about us Experts, we love to fence on subjects. Touché.
Edit: For those unfamiliar with Bobwire see this
Sheesh! I try to simplify things and people just criticize. "Truly, a prophet is without honour in his own country."

Hulle sal nooit vir ons begryp nie !
I personally like to say Lie nux, but most others pronounce it Li nux
Going further South, Linux means Beer in Australian. Most words seem to mean Beer in Australian for some reason.
Unfortunately the Australian pronunciation of Linux was lost along with the Continent during the great Shrimp Barbie catastrophe of '09. The place was destroyed and Internet connectivity lost as the Continent sunk under the Seas. This was famously recounted by Plahdo (Geek Philosopher and clay modeler) of the early 21st Century BSD (Before Sobriety Descended).
Most modern historians considers this a load of Dingo kidneys and say that Australia is simply a Allegory used for historical dramas of Post-Apocalyptic life. No one, including a fair number of the inhabitants, believe Australia really existed. And if it did it probably was located somewhere further away from New Zealand than presently accepted.
Pfft at least I don't sit on the fense lol
lih (as in li-ttle) nucks (as in tux).
As pronounced by Mr Torvalds himself - and lets face it - if anyone knows, the guy who named it should.

That settles it then. (I don't have to adopt, I did it always like that ![]()
Ik denk niet dat die amerikanen het kunnen. Hun mond staat helemaal verkeerd.
Ik heb je naam verkeerd geschreven alastairo, mijn excuses daarvoor.
