For two days, now, i've been helping a friends neighbour get connected to broadband. I was referred as my friend ( who will remain anonymous, you know who you are Rick !! ) has had a few windows problems which i sorted, in the past. Now,back to the story. I have been trying to get this person connected to their broadband via a modem/router.They had been given this router by their son as a gift, so they could get online & stay in touch, as their son is going abroad.
Day one
No matter what i tried, the router would not connect. I asked if they had the correct password & username, they said yes.I checked the line & all was fine, checked firewalls,ok. checked antivirus, etc,no problems there. As it was late in the afternoon & i had to get the kids from school,i said i'd return the next day with one of my spare modem/routers which i know has no problems.
Day two
returned to these people with my router/modem,which i had checked before leaving home. Plugged it in,checked the settings, still nothing. No broadband, no internet.Very weird. thought it might be a windows problem,as their son had taken it away & put sp3 on it. Rolled everything back, still nothing.By now i was getting very frustrated & extremely peeved. So, i checked the line for a broadband signal & it was o.k. checked everything again and again. Then, on the off-chance, i asked them who their provider was & they said pardon ? I asked again which provider they had signed up with. They said they hadn't, they thought all they needed was the router which their son had provided !!!! GAAAAHHH 2 days trying to set it up & they hadn't even got a provider. Needless to say, i pointed out the necessity of having a provider & they looked at me rather sheepishly & apologised for wasting my time. So, by this time next week, they will have a provider & i will have them set up.
Moral of the story ? Ask first to find out if they have a provider !!

You have my sympathy. You have to check to most stupid things indeed. And you forget always one of those because people are very good at giving you the impression that they know what they are talking about. They just usr the words the hear from others or read in the papers ![]()
And when you check if they know what are talking about, they get irritated very soon because you do not understand them at a first glance.
Hehe I did something similar the other day must of spent half a day wondering why the working sound wasn't working then my brother goes you have to turn the speakers on.
