Well out here in darkest Africa, we pay a premium. I pay equivalent of $15 to the telephone company for having the pleasure of a dsl line and a further $30 per month for a capped 3Gb package at a speed of 384kbps.
Now - let us know what you pay.
19.99/mo for 56K Dialup at the moment (I get between 36K and 42K actual) I have hope that the phone company is bringing DSL at 768K sometime this Summer (Price will be 42.99/mo).
For up to 8 Mb/s download and 1 Mb/s upload (no restrictions on the amount) ADSL: EUR 40 / month
For the telephone using on the same line (VOIP, either from the PC or with internal telephone direct connected to the modem) EUR 0 /month (when calling EUR 0.02 / min)
For the fact I kept my original telephone number EUR 5 / month (because of extra admin)
For a horribly slow dial-up account that on a really good day hits 28.8K, I'm paying USD $119.40/year, which works out to USD $9.95/month. I'm not sure what my basic phone service costs; my wife keeps changing companies so I can't keep track. I think it might be around USD $13/month. No DSL or cable services are available at any price this for out in the boonies. We do have some good wineries within walking distance, though. One of them has supplied the White House with several hundred cases. Too bad I can't do ETOH with my meds.

Do you still have to pay call charges, or are they free ? (you know what I mean)
No long distance charges. Although there is the normal phone monthly cost of about $20. Just got this months bill and with the dialup, phone and $14 of long distance fees it came to $60.
I pay $30 a month for DSL at home and same for DSL in the office. I know, why am i paying for a connection at work. Because I needed it there and to put a second DSL modem in the milking parlor which is where the office is it was going to cost the boss $85 a month to have a second line in his name so the easy choice was for me to get it. But really i don't pay for that one....

Do the cows hog the bandwidth? Sorry I could not resist milking this for humor. After all if "Pigs in Space" worked, why not "Cows on the Internet".
Well it either that or give them cell phones and that would be utterly ridiculous. They'ed all call California.
I think you meant it would be "udderly" ridiculous.
alastairo - the (possibly) $13 per month is for unlimited local calls. Long distance would be an extra charge per minute. But my ISP has local numbers for most anywhere in the state, so I can use my account from other locations, if desired.
I pay $34.95 USD for a broadband line from Comcast 10M down 1M up averaging 6M with a 250G/mo dld limit.
Gee once again I feel sort of ashamed

No need to be ashamed, sagemta. We will not hold it against you (HA!) for struggling along with such paltry speed/load limits.
Thanks Matt, I feel a little better now as I trudge along. As for me I'll be eating you guy's dust.
MMM it's kind of a clay taste is it Possum Blight clay?
